Do you need help financing your garden project?   Grant and loan opportunities are available to your community, tribe, school, or private organization.

Micro Grants For Food Security 

  • Micro-Grants to individuals up to $5000 and organizations up to $10,000 through the Alaska Division of Agriculture. 

  • There is a 10% cost match that will be required for each organization-approved grant. 

  • The goal of the program is to increase the quanity and quality of loclaly grown food through small scale gardening, herding, and livestock operations in food insecure communities. 

Priority will be given to: 

  • Applicants who demonstrate the ability to describe benefits to food security.

  • The number of Direct and Indirect beneficiaries of a project.

  • The completeness of a project description which includes an explanation of how the project will increase food security for direct and indirect beneficiaries.

  • Applications that provide a method to measure food produced, stored, or distributed.

​Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program 

Farmers Market Promotion Program 

  • $100,000 - $500,000

  • .Funds programs that increase domestic consumption of, and access to, locally and regionally produced agricultural products, and to develop new market opportunities for farm and ranch operations serving local markets.

  • Apply in May. 25% match requirement 

Rural Cap Foundation 

  • This is an Alaska opportunity. 

  • Rural Cap provides small grants to some of the most remote communities in AK, helping organizations access funds for projects that improve, expand, expand, and create important programs for their communities. 

  • Grants are made in the amount of $500 to $25,000. It is a case by case basis. 

  • They award money to projects that involve culture, community, leadership, food security, and environment. 

  • Port Lions was awarded $7500 to start a hydroponic community garden and feed chickens. 

  • Deadlines are April 30, August 31, and November 30.

Community Food Security Through Gardening

  • This is for Alaska Communities.

  • $10,000 Grants Awarded

  • The Community Food Security Through Gardening Grant Program seeks applications from eligible organizations for projects that address food security issues by promoting and facilitating gardening projects in Alaska.

  • This opportunity applies a broad definition of food security, meaning access by all people at all times to safe, nutritious, and local food for healthy lifestyles.

Priority will be given to organizations that:​

  • Provide participants with hands-on practical education regarding location-specific gardening best practices, crop selection, garden planning, and outcomes that empower participants to boost community food security by way of gardening.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to addressing food security concerns via growing and distributing nutritious produce within the community in which the organization is located.

  • Intend to use grant funds for school gardens, community gardens, tower gardens, edible gardens, and other hands-on projects that build gardens.

  • Leverage funds from other sources (local, state, federal, other grants, funds from the organization itself, and in-kind donations).

  • Apply in January 2026.

Community Food Projects 

  • Grants of $25,000-$400,000 Requires a 100% match

  • Funds projects designed to increase food security in communities by bringing the whole food system together to assess strengths, establish linkages, and create systems that improve the self-reliance of community members over their food needs.

  • Public food program service providers, tribal organizations, or private nonprofit entities, including gleaners (see Definitions in Part VIII, D of the RFA) are eligible to apply. Please refer to the CFP RFA for more information on eligibility.

  • Annual opportunity- Opens in September and proposals due by November.

Lawrence Foundation Grant 

An applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Nonprofit organizations that qualify for public charity status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or public schools and libraries are eligible for contributions or grants.

  • Engage in work that aligns with the Foundation’s funding interests and priorities.

  • We are okay if a portion of any grant that we award is used for reasonable indirect costs.

  • 50% or lower would be reasonable for indirect costs.

  • Grants are awarded from $5000 to $10000.

  • The next deadline is April 30, 2025.

Clif Family Foundation 

  • The goals of the organization are as follows: 

  • Regenerative and Organic Farming: Accelerate the adoption of regenerative farming practices, including organic, climate-resilient, equitable, and agroecological approaches.

  • Food Production Workers’ Health and Safety: Amplify efforts to secure healthy, safe, just, and empowering working and living conditions for food production workers.

  • Climate Justice: Expand community-centered solutions to climate change that build resilience and empower those who have been historically marginalized.

  • Healthy Food Access: Advance food systems’ changes that make healthy and sustainably produced food accessible, affordable, and culturally appropriate.

  • Inclusive Outdoor Access: Catalyze solutions that expand access to safe places to enable healthy physical activity and improve mental health.

  • Indoors and Outdoors Safe from Pollution: Promote preventative health approaches by identifying and eliminating toxics from our air, water, soil, and human-made materials.

  • August 1 is the next deadline to apply. 

  • $5000 to $50,000.
